This dish takes about 16 hours to cook. Plan ahead.

Ingredients

Sweet Onions 3 lbs
Beef Broth 10 Cups
Brown Sugar 3 tsp
Sherry 3 & 1/2 tsp
Bay Leaves 3
Dried Thyme 3 tsp
Salt 1 tsp
Pepper 1 tsp
Gruyere 1 Block
French Bread 1 Loaf
Melted Butter 5 tbsp

Instructions

  1. Slice the onions thinly and add them to a crockpot.

  2. Add the butter, salt, pepper, bay leaves, and brown sugar to the crockpot. Stir everything together.

  3. Cook the onion mixture on low for 12 hours.

  4. After 12 hours, add the beef broth and sherry to the crockpot. Stir everything together.

  5. Let the soup cook on low for an additional 6-8 hours.

  6. Once the soup is cooked, ladle it into individual bowls. Place a thick slice of Gruyere cheese on top of the soup in each bowl, and let it melt.

  7. Serve the soup with French bread.
